If Gamborgians are short on barley, may God have mercy on Denmark

Frøbjerg BavnehøjThe Funen Region consists of 125 islands and islets. Twenty-five of them are or have been inhabited. The largest islands are Funen, Tåsinge, Langeland and Ærø. The islands were created when the sea flooded the surrounding land, and the region is typified by having three times as much coastline as Denmark in general. The sea’s proximity has played a very important role throughout the region’s history.

Funen’s soil provides excellent farmland and some of the richest topsoil in Denmark is found around Gamborg in West Funen. In older times, the vast meadowland, woodland and fringe areas were crucial to farming. This dependency ceased in the 1800s and ever since the Funen wildlife areas have gradually been impoverished, as in Denmark on the whole.

This segment on nature lays the groundwork for understanding the other parts of the exhibition.
